On the night of May 8, 2023, Carsonville Fire and Rescue was paged out for a rescue call. Dispatch stated that an individual was swimming in Straight Lake near the beach in Osage. Weather records show that the air temperature was about 45 degrees that evening. 

By the time Carsonville arrived on the scene, Cyrus Gust had already noticed the individual lying on the swimming raft and had taken his watercraft out to assist him to shore. Straight Lake had just recently opened and water temperatures were frigid, making hypothermia a real threat. First responders were able to reach the patient immediately after arriving on the scene because of Cyrus’s swift action and quick thinking.
